Facebook is testing a new section for local news

A new tab highlighting information and events across the city.

Facebook wants to highlight local information. As part of a test he is currently conducting in a few American cities, Facebook has set up a new section dedicated to this local information, called "Today In".

In essence, this is a new tab that highlights not only information but also events specific to the cities concerned. To choose the information to put on this new section, Facebook uses artificial intelligence, combined with good old curation with humans.

For now, we do not know if the project will spread to other cities and countries. But Today In would be part of the Journalism Project Initiative, which aims to improve collaboration between the press and Facebook. To access this section, users affected by the test must go to the application menu and open "Today In".

More than a social network to connect with friends, Facebook has become one of the first sources of information of Internet users. But the number one social network refuses to take a role of publisher or media, preferring the status of a platform. Now that Facebook allows video monetization, people now know how to earn money from Facebook, which makes it even more popular among its users.

That did not stop him from being heavily criticized after Donald Trump's victory in the United States. Indeed, Facebook would have let propagators spread false information on its social network.

Today, Facebook agrees that it must make efforts to minimize the impact of fake news on its social network. And this year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg's challenge is to repair Facebook: "The world seems anxious and divided, and Facebook has a lot of work to do - whether to protect our community from abuse and hatred, to defend against the interference of nation states, or to ensure that time spent on Facebook is well spent. My personal challenge for 2018 is to focus on solving these important issues. We will not prevent all mistakes or abuse, but we are currently making too many mistakes in applying our policies and preventing the misuse of our tools. If we succeed this year, we will end in 2018 on a much better trajectory".
