Zalgo text is basically text created by using combining characters, also called combining marks in the Unicode standard.
The character rendering of Unicode is different than other character encodings. While normal encoding uses a simple character cell model for rendering where each glyph fits within a fixed height, Unicode has combining marks which can be rendered above, below, or even inside the base character. Combining characters (combining marks) are characters that are intended to modify other characters.
Due to this property of combining marks you can easily construct a character sequence. The combining sequence can be generated by attaching characters above and below the base character, to any visual height and length. Such a sequence has no meaning of course, but hey, it is very much attention grabbing for sure. You can also generate Zalgo text by combining both "combining above" and "combining below" marks.
