Function Keys are those 12 keys (F1 to F12) which we see in top most row in our keyboard. We all use a list of shortcut keys and all, but have you every wondered what are the main function of these function keys?
These Function keys keys perform different task for different applications. Here I'm going to brief you about all these tasks. Besides these functions, you can also re-program the functions. I have collected these information from various websites and other sources and tested most of them, getting positive results,while there are some which may not work properly.

- Basic Function: Windows Help
- Alt + F1 = Go to next field
- Shift + F1 = Start context sensitive help or reveal formatting
- Alt + Shift + F1 = Go to previous field
- Ctrl + Alt + F1 = Display system information
- Ctrl + Shift + F1 = Change Font
F2
- Basic Function: Rename File/Folder
- Alt + Shift + F2 = Save file
- Shift + F2 = Copy Text
- Ctrl + F2 = Displays the print preview
- Alt + Ctrl + F2 = Open File/Folder
F3
- Basic Function: Find Files
- Highlight/Select text + Alt + F3 = Create an auto text entry box
- Highlight/Select text + Shift + F3 = Change the case of letters
F4
- Basic Function: Repeat last action
- Alt + F4 = Close current window (When no window is open this will open Shutdown screen)
- Ctrl + F4 = Close all the open windows
- Shift + F4 = Repeat Find/Goto action
F5
- Basic Function: Refresh
- Ctrl + F5 = Restore window size
- Shift + F5 = Move to previous revision
- Ctrl + Shift + F5 = Edit Bookmark
F6
- Basic Function: Move into different structures of system
- Ctrl + F6 = Go to next window
- Shift + F6 = Go to previous pane/frame
- Shift + Ctrl + F6 = Go to previous window
F7
- Basic Function: Only within MS-Word as described below
- Alt + F7 = Finds misspelling or grammatical error
- Shift + F7 = Displays Thesaurus
- Ctrl + F7 = Choose Move command
- Shift + Ctrl + F7 = Update linked information in a word source document
F8
- Basic Function: Go to 'Safe Mode' during system is booting and within MS-Word to extend the selection/highlighted area
- Alt + F8 = Run a macro
- Shift + F8 = Shrink the selection
- Ctrl + F8 = Choose size
- Ctrl + Shift + F8 = Extend selection (then press arrow keys)
F9
- Basic Function: Only within MS-Excel to update selection field
- Alt + F9 = Switch between all field codes and their results
- Ctrl + F9 = Insert an empty field
- Shift + F9 = Switch between single field code and result
- Alt + Shift + F9 = Run goto/macro button
- Ctrl + Shift + F9 = Unlink a field
F10
- Basic Function: Activate Menu Bar
- Alt + F10 = Maximize/Minimize window (in MS-Office)
- Ctrl + F10 = Maximize/Minimize window (in MS-Office)
- Ctrl + Shift + F10 = Activate ruler (in MS-Office)
F11
- Basic Function: Maximize/Minimize windows (except MS-Office)
- Ctrl + F11 = Lock a field
- Shift + F11 = Go to previous field
- Shift + Ctrl + F11 = Unlock a field
F12
- Basic Function: Only in MS-Office as 'SaveAs' command and as described below
- Ctrl + F12 = Open command
- Shift + F12 = Save command
- Ctrl + Shift + F12 = Print command
